As part of the apprenticeship program, candidates will enroll in a three-year program consisting of both theoretical and practical learning components. The program is designed to equip apprentices with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct relevant servicing of diesel engines, electrical systems, and other mechanical/electrical components in order to diagnose issues accurately and conduct routine maintenance work aimed at improving vehicle functionality and longevity.

To be eligible for the apprenticeship program, candidates must have a Grade 12/Matric certificate, a minimum N2/N3 certificate with Mathematics, Engineering Science, or Technical/Engineering Drawings, and be a South African citizen. Additionally, having a Code 14 Driver’s License would be advantageous.

During the apprenticeship, candidates will learn a variety of skills including workshop safety, the care and use of tools applicable to the trade, identification of keys and locking devices, fusing of metal and material, pressure testing, cylinder head removal and replacement, service on vehicles, air braking test and diagnosis, fuel injector pump assessment, and engine troubleshooting, testing, and tune-up procedures.

In addition to theoretical learning, candidates will also have the opportunity to gain practical experience by assisting qualified mechanics on the floor with all mechanical repairs, ensuring the workplace is clean and tidy, troubleshooting motorized petrol/diesel fleet and undertaking repairs under the guidance of a qualified Diesel Mechanic, understanding all functions of technical components on vehicles, and performing call-out duties with a qualified mechanic.
