Anova Health Institute NPC, located in Parktown, Gauteng, is currently seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Peer Educator. This contract opportunity, posted on 07 February 2024, offers a chance to contribute to Anova’s Jab Smart project, which focuses on responding to HIV among PWUD

About Anova Health Institute NPC: Anova Health Institute is a non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to empowering individuals and transforming lives. The organization’s mission revolves around providing healthcare solutions and support to those who need it most. Anova’s Jab Smart project, initiated in late 2017, addresses HIV among PWUD in the City of Johannesburg, a demographic that often faces barriers to essential health services due to stigma and prejudice.

The Role of a Peer Educator: As a Peer Educator, your primary responsibility will be to engage with PWUD, promoting health services and harm reduction practices. The Jab Smart project is based on the concept that peer-to-peer contact among PWUD increases the receptivity of clients to essential health services. This role involves maintaining confidentiality and offering comprehensive services, including a needle and syringe program, HIV testing, TB screening, and sexual health treatment.

Peer Education - University of Johannesburg

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Peer Mobilization:
    • Recruit a minimum of 80 clients monthly and introduce them to the program and available services.
    • Conduct risk assessments for the clients reached each month.
    • Refer clients to relevant healthcare professionals and support services.
  2. Field Support:
    • Provide harm reduction information and packages to at least 80 clients monthly.
    • Manage your cohort, ensuring they receive services, and report updates to the coordinator.
  3. Mapping:
    • Identify at least two new sites monthly, adding them to the mapping tool.
  4. Debriefing and Counselling Sessions:
    • Attend social debriefing sessions and provide monthly feedback to the coordinator.
    • Attend psychosocial counseling sessions and offer monthly feedback to the coordinator.
  5. Other Tasks:
    • Undertake any additional tasks as agreed with the line manager.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Grade 12.
  • Numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Ability to establish trust and communicate effectively with active drug users.
  • Strict adherence to confidentiality requirements.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Prior knowledge of HIV/AIDS and a recognized HIV counseling certificate would be an advantage.
