What Will You Be Doing?

As an Apprentice Wheat Miller at Premier Durban Mill, you will:

  1. Complete Theoretical Courses: Engage in theoretical courses through SAGMA (South African Grain Milling Academy) while gaining practical experience in a milling environment.
  2. Work in Designated Areas: Collaborate in designated areas based on your learning modules to acquire practical experience, translating theoretical learning into hands-on understanding.
  3. Key Competencies: Learn and master key competencies of each department, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the milling supply chain.
  4. Operate a Mill: Under the guidance of the Production Manager/Head Miller, learn to operate a mill at designated capacity with optimum extractions, producing finished products fit for human consumption.
  5. Shifts and Training: The apprenticeship program spans three years, involving theoretical self-learning and practical application training. This includes working shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 (not older than 24 months)
    • Mathematics (not Maths Literacy): 60% and above
    • Physical Science: 60% and above

Experience:

  • No prior experience required
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Curious mindset with good problem-solving (reasoning) skills.
    • Ability to operate in a pressurized environment.
    • Team player with the ability to work under minimal supervision.
    • Enjoy working with mechanical systems and technically inclined.
    • Process orientation and a mindset for process improvement.

Key Outputs

As an Apprentice Wheat Miller, you will be expected to:

  • Pass each SAGMA module at the prescribed rate.
  • Possess a good knowledge of the relevant department/area in the milling supply chain, capable of performing required key tasks after completing each module.
  • Execute any other tasks required by the Production Manager/Head Miller.
