About Vaalputs
Vaalputs established in 1986 as the national, near surface, radioactive waste disposal facility that serves South Africa’s needs for disposing of low-level radioactive waste generated by nuclear industrials. It is situated in the Northern Cape about 100km south of Springbok and is currently managed and operated by Nuclear Liabilities Management department (NLM) of Necsa. The National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) is in the process of obtaining a nuclear installation license for Vaalputs and, once this has been accomplished, the incumbent will be reporting within the NRWDI structures.
Job Profile:
Responsible for the Operations of delegated tasks relating to the receipt, disposal and after care of radioactive waste at Vaalputs as well as operating and maintaining the systems and equipment required for the efficient management of Vaalputs.
Responsibilities:
• Loading and off-loading of radioactive waste packages.
• Pre-use inspections of waste handling equipment.
• Accurate emplacement of waste packages in disposal trenches.
• Backfill waste packages with clay.
• Cap trenches.
• Re-vegetation of capped trenches.
• Decontaminate waste packages or contaminated environment where required.
• Inspect and maintain physical state of perimeter fences.
• Inspect and maintain water supply system and ensure continuous water supply to facilities.
• Operate and maintain domestic waste site.
• Inspect and maintain all Vaalputs access, roads, fire breaks around security fences and border fences.
• Handle equipment according to manual.
• Inspect, clean and maintain equipment in a good running order.
• Delegated member of emergency team.
• Attend emergency team training courses and emergency exercises.
• Maintain, inspect and test emergency equipment according to schedule
• Report incidents and non-conformities.
Requirements:
• Grade 10.
• Preferably code 14 driver’s license and PDP.
• Radiation and decontamination worker (in-service training).
• At least 3 – 5 years’ experience in
– Operating of earth moving machines; and
– Operating of lifting equipment. (mobile crane , overhead crane, Tractor, Forklift, Grader, Compactors, Front-end loader, Compressors, Screening Plant)

Knowledge and Skills:
• Knowledge of and experience in quality requirements, specifically ISO 9001, 14001
• Attend training sessions in Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental and Nuclear License issues.
• Be prepared to render after-hours emergency services
• Committed to safety culture
• Doing BBS ‘s as required
• Delegated member of Health and Safety Committee.
• Delegated as an appointed Health and Safety Representative.
• Maintain an up-to-date status of compulsory courses (radiation worker, noise worker, decontamination worker etc).
• Must be able to implement works instruction and report deviations to the Supervisor.
